The Miracle of...apple cider vinegar?

IN THE NEWS: Fla. man charged with posing as twin after DUI. Read more here.

I'm on a new health kick thanks to my hubby. He's been reading a book by Patricia Bragg called Apple Cider Vinegar: Miracle Health System and naturally I had to sneak a peek at it too.

It's pretty interesting. But, this vinegar isn't your normal looking stuff you use to make salad dressings with. This is hard core, RAW, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar. (Meaning shake well)

According to the book, "Research worldwide supports and commends what Hippocrates (the father of medicine) found and treated his patients with in 400 B.C. He discovered that natural, undistilled Apple Cider Vinegar (or ACV)* is a powerful cleansing and healing elixir, "a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria" for a healthier, stronger, longer life!"

Sweet, huh?

Well, no, actually it's not. Sweet, that is. It tastes pretty darn TART. But you only mix 1 tsp in 8oz glass of purified water three times a day. I'm so used to the taste now that I actually miss it when I'm drinking my plain water.

According to Bragg, here are some benefits to apple cider vinegar:

Internal benefits:
•Rich in enzymes & potassium
•Support a healthy immune system
•Helps control weight
•Promotes digestion & ph Balance
•Helps soothe dry throats
•Helps remove body sludge toxins

External benefits:
•Helps maintain healthy skin
•Helps promote youthful, healthy bodies
•Soothes irritated skin
•Relieves muscle pain from exercise

Well, I'm sold. If Jack LaLanne supports it, it must have some merit. :)

Bragg also goes on to say how important water is (check), how important staying away from caffeine is (somewhat of a check), how important exercise is (check), how good fasting is (somewhat of a check) and to avoid meat (DRAT! no check)
I still have beef or pork once a week.

Hey, it's all baby steps.:)

Have you heard of the benefits of apple cider vinegar before?
Would you consider drinking it?

I've never heard of mixing it with water like that. I love to use it in barbecue recipes. Apparently I've been helping keep my family healthy every time I make pulled pork. :-)

Thats pretty interesting, I think Ive heard that before. Let us know how it goes or if you see any changes.

I'd give it a try. I started drinking green tea this winter, which has many of the same health benefits you mention with the cider. Something about the whole tea making process is comforting, so I've been enjoying that.

I've heard this and definitely need to give it a try.
SO funny about that FL guy. My sis had some friends who were identical twins. One of the twins decided to be a stripper (sad, but she's not anymore). Anyway, she was such a turd because she used her sister's name for her stripper name. *shaking head at the memory*

Interesting. I might try this when I'm done with the fast our church is doing. It's over on Sunday at midnight.

I've never heard of this but I have to admit that I'm intrigued enough to try it! I've been good about the water intake lately so adding something to it should be no problem!

Thanks for sharing the tip!

Hey Jennifer, would you be shocked to know I've taken Apple Cider Vinegar for years. I studied up on organics and also read a book about natural cures. Apple Cider is good for a great many things. Only I take it straight, by the tablespoon. At first it was hard, but it got easier as time went on. We eat a lot of meat in our home. My husband grew up raising cattle so that will never change, but it helps with digesting the meat quickly.

I would suggest Apple Cider to everybody.

Great post. And congrats on your new discovery. ;)

My mil has been touting this for about six months now. Not sure where she got it, but she swears by it.

I don't know if I could give up meat. I love it.

My husband bought some a few months back on a recommendation from a co-worker.

I haven't tried it myself, but you've piqued my interest.

This is actually really fascinating. I must learn more! Thanks, Jennifer. :-)

I have never heard of this before, though the benefits sound good :) I need to drink more water and I just love meat too much to even go down to once a week.

I've not heard of this, but I did have a foot zoner tell me to put lemon in my water, and this seems like the same idea.

I worked in a health food store about 15 years ago, and we always sold lots of the stuff. I've never taken it though. I can barely remember to take my vitamins, never mind the extra fancy stuff. :)

Tracy: Oh, yeah. My vitamin list is pretty long, too. :)

I worked at a local health food store for a stint and people swore by that stuff. They loved it. There's always some "hafta try" item that either works for you or don't and that's that... :O)

My husband is a twin and I've often wondered about the cop thing. Good to know.

I have heard this. My dad actually just started taking apple cider vinegar a few weeks ago. This year I'm trying to move toward a healthier lifestyle (possibly vegan) so I'm definately going to try it! Thanks for the info!

I'll go get some when this snow clears. My new meds are causing my reflux to get worse. Thanks for the tip!

Jennifer, I DO drink it on and off.

It's Bragg unfiltered organic raw unfiltered and STRONG!!!

My grandmother told me about it at least 15, possibly 20 years ago.

My mom has a book from the 60's (or did); it's about Vermont Folk Medicine and it's full of the virtues of apple cider vinegar. If you want, I'll get it and send it to you.

Not that everyone wants to know this but, my husband drinks it and to put it nicely - it helps to regulate his bowels - as in stop my kids from passing out at his gas! ;)
