From TBB to TBR

IN THE NEWS:Man fleeing Ohio police jumps fence--into prison. Read more HERE.

Hey, all!
Yes, I know it's WIP Wednesday, but considering this will be my last post until after Easter... I thought I'd change it up a bit.

I don't know about you, but I like to a lot of birthday/Christmas shopping online because of convenience and time. However, when I do this I end up ordering books for myself. (Especially if I need to have at least $25 for free shipping on Amazon) :)

These aren't random books that I buy, however. They are titles taken from a section of my computer that I have compiled in a carefully thought over TBB (TO BE BOUGHT) list.

Do you have a TBB list, too?

No? Oh, well, here's how and why I make mine.

When I read about a book that interests me on a blog or website or facebook, etc... I don't want to forget it, so I look it up and save the link in a "new books" folder in my "favorites" section of my computer. **I guess you could call me an online promo author's best friend. Because it works in my case**
Then...when I'm ready for some new reading material, I go to Amazon or MyBookStore and More or Harlequin (the three online places I like to order paper and electronic books from), and I have my shopping list already made out and handy.

I rarely go in "cold' to a book store. I know what I'm looking for and snatch it up. Now a library on the other hand, I tend to browse more and become much more adventurous in what I'll pick up and try.

Once I'm in buy-mode, though, I'll order anywhere from 3 to5 books at a shot from my TBB list. And what I order will totally depend on my mood or how long it's been on my list.

Then the day arrives.
The books come! (or, if I order ebooks, they're already here!!) And I officially have a TBR (TO BE READ) pile.

So how do I decide what to read first?

Well, it depends. But I usually like to start off with one or two books that are in my genre first--just to keep up with what is being published. Personal preference, luck of the draw, but sometimes if it got a good RT review, I'll go with that one first. After that, it really depends on my mood and if I need a genre sorbet or not. (You know, a totally different book to cleanse my reading palate) :)

And basically, THAT, my friends, is how a book goes from a TBB thought to a TBR pile to actually being read. (In my house, anyway)

What's your method of buying books?
Actual book store or online?
Are you a person who buys a book here and there on a whim, or are you like me and attack a book store with a plan and definitive action?

I buy on a whim if I happen to be walking by the only place in Athens that sells English books. Otherwise I'm an Amazon girl, for obvious reasons,(refer to 1st sentence). And when I'm on Amazon I buy about 6-10 books at once. Not from any list mind you.

I have a little strategy. I buy at least two from authors that I like and want thier latest release to keep up to date, two from authors that I've heard great reviews about, but that I've never read before, and two complete random choices based on blurb and mood, that I've never heard of.

So, there you go. That's my book buying frenzy that happens perhaps three times a year, cause I still have a pile high that I haven't read yet from the 'whim' buys ... hmmm I'm a guilty maniac book buyer.

Oh, and I just can't bring myself to buy e-books. I need the smell and feel of the paper to accompany my reading pleasures :)

Interesting! :-) I rarely buy books lately, but when I do, it's been online 'cause of the kiddos.
I have TBB list and it's mostly fellow blogger books that I'd like to get. If I hear about a great book from someone, I just rent it from the library.
Enjoy your Easter break!

I have a wishlist on Amazon where I list the books I want to read. First, though, I check the library and if they don't have it, then it goes on my list! :)

I never buy in the bookstores. Ordering online is less expensive (no shipping and handling). Now that I have a Kindle, all of my future buying will be electronic books. In the meantime I have about 30 books in my TBR tower which are divided into Must Read and Keep For Later. Sigh ...

I have a huge TBB list! I can't help myself it just keeps growing and growing! I go with the one that peaks my interest next, it's not the greatest way but it's my way!

I seriously probably spend more money on books than I do clothing. Amazon for me and I usually buy several at the same time. Donald Miller recently had a list of the top seven books to read if you want to improve as a writer on his blog. I wrote them down. Bought three and smiled as they came in the mail.

I love shopping for books. Online and in the store. Have a great break.

I usually end up buying some sort of book for myself every time I go in a bookstore, regardless of what I went in there for. It's a rare thing these days for me to order on-line. I don't usually have a plan for the bookstore. Unless a book I was looking forward to has just come out. Then I go there specifically to buy that book. (And sometimes come out with multiple books.)

I probably should have a plan so I don't overspend. Sigh.

I'm a bookstore shopper. Usually I have a certain book in mind, but often end up adding something else to the checkout too.

Since I'm on a budget these days, I spend more time in the library than in book stores. I have a list at the back of a notebook that I add to whenever I hear/read of something that sounds intriguing. If the book is not available in our library, I take advantage of the opportunity to order it from my library's network. Most times I am able to get what I want, except for new best sellers. There is enough good writing out there though, that I can afford to be patient. Those books eventually get to the library too. Oh, and if I found an author I love, I gobble up everthing I can read by that person all in a row.

I have a TBB list also. I usually buy the ones that have been recommended strongly first.

Now that I have a Kindle I buy from Amazon. If the book is not available in electronic form then I'm off to the bookstore.

I love that I can browse Amazon and read excerpts right from the Kindle before I decide to buy.

If I go into a bookstore, I have a budget I can spend, but not a list of books. I like the thrill of finding something new and unexpected. It's a great pick me up. If I'm shopping online, it's generally for a title I've heard about or am looking forward to, like a sequel or new book by a fav author.

My reading list is pretty eclectic. I read mostly by recommendation. And a lot of times, the recommendation is my husband's. He's not a specific genre reader, so I read a lot of different things.

I have a to-be-read list that I pull from whenever I go into a bookstore. I like to try books out before I buy them, which works unless they're brand new. Usually I save the books I want to buy for birthday and Christmas lists :)

That's a great idea. I always write lists, but then I lose them and when I go to the bookstore I forget what book I wanted to buy. Sucks to get old.

That's a great one. I have scraps of paper scattered about with TBBs on them. I also sneak in a little sumpin for me when I order gifts. I have no strategy for what I pick up "next" from the giant pile. Sometimes it's the one that I borrowed a year ago from someone and need to return it before I forget who that person is!

This is a great idea! So often I write down a book that interests me then lose the paper. I need to devote a file just for TBB books! Happy easter and Happy three hundred followers! You rock! But then, I've always known that. =)

I love this! I, too, have a list! I recently became addicted to Goodreads and every time I find a blogger or friend that recommends something to me, I add it to my "to read" list.

My books have been stacking up in piles since I started...time to knock them down and get to reading!

Happy Easter!

If it's a fellow author who has a book coming out, then I certainly buy that one. But The Husband has cast suspicious looks at our bookshelves, mumbling about things like, "Load bearing walls" and "health and safety codes."

So I made a deal with him. I only buy books I love, love, love.

That means I only buy books that I first check out from the public library (and then love, love, love). It drives him crazy. He says, "But you've READ that one already. You know how it ENDS."

Pfft. I love it. 'S all that matters.

This is a BRILLIANT post.
Yes, I have TBR, TBB, TBC, TBLA, MBTAB, HOO, all kind of lists!!!

I now keep a page in my journal for to be considered, to be bought, t be looked at. It's so fun, like a kid whose nose is glued to a candy counter glass!

How do I decide? Research and dear agent often decides for me. also, I facilitate a Bible study, and I helped choose some summer reads TBVO (to be voted on)
You are so fun...and so is this blog.

Also informative.

I have a TBB list in my brain. And I'm like you I fill up Amazon orders with books pretty darn often. Cause you know it's not like buying something for myself when the main part of the order is for the kiddos right? ;)

Nice. I have something somewhat similar. I basically save all the books I hear about on Amazon's wish list, I don't always buy them there, but it keeps it all in one spot.

My TBR pile is big, as is many of us, basically my favorite authors' new books win, then some that I've been wanting to read. I also go to the library.

Great post ;o)

I usually buy in store - but I'm doing online more often. If I'm instore it's more often spur of the moment too :)

There are too many books on my TBR list/pile. But I like to go to the book store and just look. Which, usually turns into buying something, which only adds more to my TBR pile, bt I'm too impatient to wait for books ordered online. LOL.

My TBB verses TBR pile is so unbalanced at the moment. But the Easter holiday has arrived so the TBR pile will shrink and then later so will my bank balance. ;)

Kristen Torres-Toro said...

I definitely make a TBB list on Amazon. :0) It helps me remember what is coming up for whenever I have enough to buy a book.

Linda Kage said...

I always called it my Wish List, but who am I really kidding. There's no wishing that maybe I'll get these book...I WILL be getting them no matter what. So, I much perfer you term TBB. Thanks!

PatriciaW said...

What you call a TBB, I call my TBR list. Your term is probably more accurate but sometimes I get these books from the library or borrow them, so they aren't necessarily purchased. It's an Excel spreadsheet.

I absolutely reference my list when I'm book buying, especially if buying online. I access it so frequently, usually a few times a week, that I am conscious of what's on it for when I walk into stores.

Then, of course, there's my physical TBR pile too.

I don't have a method anymore. But I do look at reader reviews on Amazon and B&N. These go a long way in how I determine what I read next.
