My YA Reading List for the Year

Happy Monday, all!

My daughter is in seventh grade this year. (A yikes)

That's a whole other issue. But I'm trying to encourage her to read more so I decided to read her list of required reading along with her for her Language Arts class.

What's on her--er, now MY list?

The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

I think it'll be good for my daughter to see me reading what she is reading so I can empathize with her and also bring up some good discussions about the books as well, which might help her in school.

Actually, I've never read a Neil Gaiman book but always meant to and here is my chance, so I'm pretty excited about that!

I've also meant to get back to reading YA too. I've kind of drifted away from it but I'm ready for a change again.

Do you read or have you read what your kids were reading in school?

Have you read any of the above books?

I think it's wonderful you'll read the books along with your daughter.

I'm happy to see that her list includes some fairly recent titles. It's still 2/3 male authors though, a problem I've recently seen in school reading lists that include modern books among the classics. An author friend told me about how a teacher at her local high school proudly announced that he'd be teaching a YA Lit class this semester, something she'd been urging him to do for a long time. He expected her to be thrilled and was taken aback when she pointed out that every single author on the list was male.

Very cool! I've heard of The Maze Runner, but I haven't read any of these.

My son has been studying THE GIVER in school as well, and I LOVED THE GRAVEYARD BOOK - it's very moving.

What a terrific idea! When our kids were in school, most of the books on their reading lists were classics I'd already read back in the Dark Ages when I was in school. It's terrific that more recent books are making the lists nowadays.

Hi, Jennifer! Long time no read. I loved the books on your reading list. Gaiman writes some really creative stuff. Graveyard book is a good one to dive in with, but his older YA/adult titles are awesome. It's fun that you'll be reading with your daughter. I loved it when my mom read with me.
