It's So Easy Eating Green...

IN THE NEWS: "Pair trying to catch fish net $87,000 in cash." Read more here.

<-- This looks bad but it's a food addiction of mine--Salsa Verde.

I spoke about my favorite food-- Salsa Verde --in January. Well, I'm afraid I haven't kicked the habit. I still eat this stuff as if it were chocolate wrapped in chocolate. But I recently ran into a problem. I haven't see Pace brand Salsa Verde is MONTHS!

Was this stuff taken off the market? (Don't tell me if it was)

It's okay. I've taken up making my own anyway. I found out there's a Latino market right in my very own town. Lucky me! Yep, and it only costs me $1.50 to get a pound of tomatillos and 2 jalapeno peppers.

What's a tomatillo, you ask? (See below) They look like green tomatoes but have a papery husk.

Anyhew, I've made this salsa three times last week. I couldn't keep it on hand for longer than a day. It's so good with tortilla chips. And I especially like it over chili.

Here's the recipe:

Salsa Verde

1 pound of tomatillos
2 jalapenos with the seeds removed cut into strips
1 cup of coarsely chopped onions
1 cup of loosely packed cilantro
1 lime for juice
Salt to taste
2 cloves of garlic, chopped

Heat a non stick fry pan with a little PAM or vegetable oil and saute everything but lime juice and cilantro. When tomatillos soften and onions begin to brown, remove and place in food processor or blender. Add cilantro and lime juice. Blend until chopped but still has body. Season with salt. Then devour.

I LOVE it!

Are you a salsa fan?

I'm not a salsa fan but my husband is like you. Whenever we eat Mexican he usually goes through at least a bowl chips and salsa.

That salsa is scaring me..... When I was pregnant I would juice carrots and put fresh dandelions in it. YUkky and green, but suposedly great for the pregnancy. :O)

Mmm. I love salsa, as long as it isn't super spicy. I'm actually planning on making some this week. I might have to try your salsa verde too.

Homemade salsa is the best. DH makes the best salsa. I'll have to pass this recipe on to him...maybe he'll make it for me :)

Okay, I just wrote a comment, but it didn't go through. Bummer!!

I've got to say that picture turned me off. I love salsa, but I'm prejudice--it needs to be read with green and white flecks, not looking like a quary of jello. LOL

Hi Jennifer,

I am a huge salsa fan. This is the recipe I posted on my blog for red salsa. http://mariazannini.blogspot.com/2009/06/lets-salsa.html

I tried making a green salsa this summer, but I thought it came out a little bitter. Has that ever happened with yours? My mother says it happens sometimes so she always adds a pinch of sugar.

Glad to meet another salsa junkie!

Yes, I'm a total salsa junkie!

I've never had a bitter problem, although when I used canned tomatillos, it had a bit of a twang to it. Not bad, just different.

Yummy! I have an awesome chicken casserole recipe with salsa verde, but I always used canned. I might try to make my own next time. Do you think leftovers would freeze? Thanks!

Thank you, thank you! I'm always looking for gluten free recipes. I love salsa and cilantro is one of my favorite flavors to add. This sounds delicious and I can't wait to try it.

This would never last more than an hour in this house! YUM! Although, I gotta say, that first picture looks a little bit like haggis. If you've never heard of it...google it...G-R-O-S-S! :)

Jennifer! You're not kidding that looks bad! LOL ;) but I know it's yummy! LOVE salsa verde! I just hate peeling those tomatillos...that sticky papery mess. Your recipe looks easy and good!

YUM!!! And, thank you for explaining, and including a picture of, tomatillos! I've always wondered!

When I lived in California I had a roommate who made THE BEST salsa verde. I have thought of trying to make it myself a bunch of times, but I have an unreasonable fear of tomatillos.

Yum! That sounds delish.

I LOVE salsa verde! I'm also a huge fan of green chile (when I lived in Colorado Springs, there was a little tiny hole in the wall place that made smothered breakfast burritos... oh yum).

Mmm.....
