Thursday Thirteen #8

All this talk of opening lines from Romance Divas and the Samhain Best Opening line contest gave me my Thursday Thirteen this week.

Thirteen of the Best Opening Lines
from Books I've Read Over the Past Year

1…. All that spring Honey prayed to Walt Disney. (Honey Moon by Susan Elizabeth Phillips)

2....I might as well tell you right know, I killed Reverend Daniel Glory. (Tribulation House by Chris Well)

3....I'm a stalker. The good kind. (Fools Rush In by Kristan Higgins) ** Okay this has two lines. But it was such a funny opener, I had to do it.

4....I was in the fifth grade the first time I thought about turning thirty. (Something Borrowed by Emily Griffith)

5....In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Holy Bible, ESV version)

6....At age thirty, Valerie Wagner had begun to fear that the fashion career she'd dreamed of since opening her first Vogue at age nineteen was actually a grand and cruel delusion, and that perhaps medical intervention might be required in getting over it. ( Dear Prince Charming by Donna Kauffman)

7....When Ellie awoke that morning, it was with the sense that something terrible had happened. (Daddy's Little Girl by Mary Higgins Clark)

8.... The last thing Nina Asker needed was Fred. (Anyone but You by Jennifer Crusie)

9....McCaleb saw her before she saw him. (Bloodwork by Michael Connolly)

10....It was extremely likely that she was going to die. (Everyday, Average Jones by Suzanne Brockmann)

11.... There are some men who enter a woman's life and screw it up forever. (One for the Money by Janet Evanovich)

12....If Annabelle hadn't found a body lying under "Sherman", she wouldn't have been late for her appointment with the Python. (Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips)

13....I have seen two brides trip and fall down the aisle; one topple into a reflection pool; one whose violent sneeze catapulted her tiara into the front row during vows, gashing the eye of the father-in-law to be. (I Do (but I Don't) by Cara Lockwood.

Does your favorite author have a great opening line? Post it here.

They are great. I have a terrible memory for first lines (unless they're famous). I am not detail oriented.
I love these.

Of course, #5 is my favorite, but 1 and 11 are great!

I'm not going to do the Thursday Thirteen, but I think I'll use this for a blog topic. Thanks!

Great first lines. That #1 is a killer!

Rhonda Helms said...

Nice list! I read this book called Lying...and the first line was something like, "Sometimes, I lie." LOL--good way to start the book, right?

Robin L. Rotham said...

Gotta love Stephanie Plum! :D

I liked the Evanovich line. Made me smile even if I resent her now for cheating me of a nice long sex scene with Ranger. B*tch. One paragraph? Puh-lease.

Great opening lines! I've read some of these authors, but not the works mentioned here. I obviously have some catching up to do! *G*

I have never paid attention to opening lines as a reader, but now as a writer I'm starting to notice how a book will draw you in.

Good stuff!
Happy TT! http://www.ameliajune.net/blog

I love #11 - I'm a huge Stephanie fan. Nora Roberts has some awesome first lines but I don't have any of her books handy to grab.

Very cool ... nothing like studying opening lines to help you see your own possibilities ...
